When former President Lee Teng-Hui received my gift of the book
"Open the the Way for Next Generation" (Kuo Lichang, 2005), he
immediately flipped through it and saw a photo of William H. Gates Sr. and me
on page 191. He then told a story.

On January 13, 1988, President Chiang Ching-Kuo passed away
suddenly, and Lee Teng-Hui succeeded him as president, but undercurrents were
surging. President Lee was feeling anxious and uneasy when someone informed
him: "The governor of Washington
State is visiting."
President Lee said he was 183 cm
tall, and he was most impressed by Mr. Gates, who was a head taller than him.
He mainly came to ask President Lee for help with the practice of "law +
software"—if PCs exported from Taiwan had "MS-DOS" (Disk
Operation System) installed (without any patents), he hoped to pay for it.
President Lee quickly found the relevant departments to handle it. He said:
"Later it seemed to be $100 per unit." William won the first battle,
and then followed the same method. Under "zero marginal cost", he
actually created the world's richest man.
